Why Women’s Participation in Cuesports Matters

Cuesports have long provided opportunities for competition, friendship, and personal development, yet women have historically been underrepresented in billiards and snooker. Increasing women’s participation isn’t simply about numbers, it’s about building a stronger, more inclusive sporting community for everyone.

Participation in sport offers well-known benefits. It builds confidence, improves mental wellbeing, encourages social connection, and creates opportunities for personal achievement. For many women, cuesports also provide a welcoming competitive outlet that can be enjoyed at any age and at many skill levels.

However, barriers still exist. A lack of visibility, limited pathways, and environments that sometimes feel unwelcoming can discourage women from taking part or continuing in the sport. When more women participate, these barriers naturally begin to disappear. Clubs become more inclusive, events grow, and younger players can see clear pathways forward.

Representation also matters. When women see others like them competing, coaching, organising events, or leading associations, participation becomes more achievable and less intimidating. Visibility helps grow confidence, and confidence grows participation.

At the Women’s Billiards and Snooker Network Incorporated, our goal is to support and connect women in cuesports while creating opportunities for development at every level — from someone picking up a cue for the first time through to players representing Australia on the international stage.

The future of cuesports grows stronger when everyone feels they belong. By encouraging more women and girls to participate, we build healthier clubs, stronger competitions, and a community that benefits all players.

And the journey is only just beginning.
